Welp, a lot of people love this one, but I think The Boatmans Call is a lot better.Ī lot. Then they should skip right over God is in the House, because that one sucks.
Im not sure what you should cut and what you should keep, really, except the album just wouldnt be the same without the sheer badassery of There She Goes My Beautiful World or the mournful beauty of O Children. You open it with the howling storm Tupelo, eerie Say Goodbye to the Little Girl Tree, and off-the-rails Train Long Suffering, and you close it with the great dynamics-a-thon Wanted Man and the unsettling Blind Lemon Jefferson. Side one is great, with a lurching Leonard Cohen cover, two eerie, atmospheric pieces that hit the mark perfectly, and a title track that sounds like it was dredged up from the deepest, darkest corners of hell.
